Venom 101: A History of the Spider-Man Villain

This week Sony releases the Spider-Man spinoff film, Venom. Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man and his vast library of supporting characters and villains. This film is the first attempt at expanding their own Spider-Man Cinematic Universe. As of now the film doesn’t connect to the Spider-Man we’ve seen in the MCU played by Tom Holland. So who is Venom, and what makes him worthy of his own film? Diving into the history of the character today, we’re looking at his comic book background and where he’s been seen before.

Venom Rating May Mean an MCU Connection

The upcoming Sony Pictures Spider-Man spinoff, Venom, has officially been rated PG-13 by the MPAA. Many expected the film to be an R rated feature, similar to Deadpool and Logan, but the idea of it being PG-13 has been rumored for a few months. The news is a bit bittersweet as the character leans more towards the R rated type of film. But this may bode well for Spider-Man fans at large.

SDCC: Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse – Steinfeld, Johnson, Moore, Cage, Glenn and Mulaney!

The 2018 San Diego International Comic Con has come to a close but we still have TONS of news from the yearly event! At this year’s SDCC, Sony brought the cast and creators behind the upcoming Spider-Man animated film, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse,  to Hall H to present footage from the film and some details on the upcoming flick. Co Directors Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman were joined by cast members Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, and Hailee Steinfeld, as well as producer Chris Miller and writer/producer Phil Lord. The project began with Lord and Miller being asked by Sony to make an animated Spider-Man film, they agreed as long as they were able to use Miles Morales. In the Ultimate line of comics, Miles becomes Spider-Man after the Peter Parker of his universe is killed. The film begins with this story and expands from there.

SDCC: Venom

The 2018 San Diego International Comic Con is in full swing and we’ve got all the big updates you want to hear about! Sony is working to expand their Spider-Man Universe with plans for multiple live action films featuring some supporting cast of the Spider-Man comics. The first of which is Venom, based on the much beloved villain/anti-hero. Tom Hardy leads the film, which co stars Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Woody Harrelson. Director Ruben Fleischer, Hardy, and Ahmed were on hand at SDCC for a panel on the film and we’ve got all the details.

Prelude to SDCC: Sony’s Spider-Man Films

In anticipation of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con we’re looking at everything we know will be there, some things that may show up, and what we know about the various projects thus far. The San Diego Comic Con is the biggest pop culture convention in the world, and many studios release new information on projects, new trailers, and much more over the five days of the convention. Spike Lee gets into the Superhero game with “Nightwatch”

A recent report by THR has confirmed that Spike Lee is in negotiations with Sony to direct a film based on the Marvel superhero Nightwatch. The film is being written by Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker and continues Sony’s attempt to expand their superhero franchises past Spider-Man. Other upcoming Sony films include a Venom film starring Tom Hardy (set for release this October) and Silver and Black, a film based on the Spider-Man characters Silver Sable and Black Cat (in pre-production).
