The upcoming Sony Pictures Spider-Man spinoff, Venom, has officially been rated PG-13 by the MPAA. Many expected the film to be an R rated feature, similar to Deadpool and Logan, but the idea of it being PG-13 has been rumored for a few months. The news is a bit bittersweet as the character leans more towards the R rated type of film. But this may bode well for Spider-Man fans at large.
The 2018 San Diego International Comic Con has come to a close but we still have TONS of news from the yearly event! At this year’s SDCC, Sony brought the cast and creators behind the upcoming Spider-Man animated film, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse, to Hall H to present footage from the film and some details on the upcoming flick. Co Directors Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman were joined by cast members Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, and Hailee Steinfeld, as well as producer Chris Miller and writer/producer Phil Lord. The project began with Lord and Miller being asked by Sony to make an animated Spider-Man film, they agreed as long as they were able to use Miles Morales. In the Ultimate line of comics, Miles becomes Spider-Man after the Peter Parker of his universe is killed. The film begins with this story and expands from there.

Sony is working to expand their Spider-Man Universe with plans for multiple live action films featuring some supporting cast of the Spider-Man comics. With the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming set to hit theaters July 5th of next year, and filming set to begin later this summer, we were due for some updates on the film. Today we have some news on the villain of the upcoming sequel, news on a returning character, and a theory on another Avenger showing up.
A recent report by THR has confirmed that Spike Lee is in negotiations with Sony to direct a film based on the Marvel superhero Nightwatch. The film is being written by Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker and continues Sony’s attempt to expand their superhero franchises past Spider-Man. Other upcoming Sony films include a Venom film starring Tom Hardy (set for release this October) and Silver and Black, a film based on the Spider-Man characters Silver Sable and Black Cat (in pre-production).
