Finally, we get to the Best Picture category!
Tonight is the 91st Annual Academy Awards! And all day today we’ll be bringing you a rundown of each category as well as reviews of the nominated films. Next up, we’re looking at the rest of the technical categories that make up the finer parts of filmmaking, Score, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Costume Design, and Cinematography. We’ll run through each category and explain who the front runner is.
Production Design
The Production design category covers everything from designing sets to making props. Everything that helps create the world of the film. Honestly, Black Panther has to be the front runner here. I don’t see the Academy not giving the film an award, and if it’s going to win anything it’s going to be some of the technical categories.
Cinematography
The Cinematography category covers how the film was shot. If you see a scene in a film and say, I want a picture of that hanging on my wall, that’s because the cinematographer did his job really well. This year it’s honestly between Cuarón for Roma and Dechanel for Never Look Away. Roma has a good chance at winning a lot thanks to straight ticket ballots this year, especially wherever Cuarón’s name pops up. But Never Look Away is nominated for a damn good reason. It’s a beautifully shot film, and deserves any attention it can get.
Makeup and Hairstyling
This category is pretty self explanatory, it covers any hair and makeup done for a film. The frontrunner here has got to be Vice. That film lives and dies by the portrayal of the men and women portrayed in the film, and the team behind the makeup and hair work wonders. Bale and company transform into these people we know easily thanks to their work.
Original Score
The score of a film consists of any music that underscores the scenes of a film, and in turn helps set the mood for the film. I’m going to go with If Beale Street Could Talk here, that film is definitely the frontrunner, and the mood of the film is incredibly specific and would not work without a score this beautiful.
Costume Design
This category covers any clothing that the cast wears. As such it can be a major element of any film, especially period pieces and superhero film. Black Panther is without a doubt the frontrunner here, and as we said with Production Design, it’s likely one of the few awards the film may receive tonight.
So as of now here’s our final word:
Production Design: Black Panther
Cinematography: Roma
Makeup and Hairstyling: Vice
Original Score: If Beale Street Could Talk
Costume Design: Black Panther
