Tom Hardy leaked our first look at Woody Harrelson as the villain Cletus Kasady in Venom 2!
2018’s Venom was a slightly surprising success. The film wasn’t as good as it could have been, and had some major pacing and plot issues, but it was entertaining. That led to a Box Office haul of over $850 million, and Sony immediately began work on a sequel. The new film is set to hit theaters October 2nd of this year, with motion capture extraordinaire, Andy Serkis at the helm. The film will see the return of Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock aka Venom, as he faces off against the symbiotes Carnage (Woody Harrelson) and Shriek (Naomie Harris).
The first film featured a mid credits scene with Eddie meeting Cletus Kasady in prison to question him for a story he was reporting on. In the comics Kasady becomes the villain known as Carnage when part of Eddie’s symbiote leaves him and bonds to Kasady while they’re sharing a prison cell. It’s likely the new film will take that mid credits moment, with the two meeting in prison, as it’s jumping off point for the creation of Carnage. While Venom gets a lot of attention, Carnage is honestly a much more horrifying villain. Carnage is almost like Joker for Spider-Man in the sense that all he cares about is destruction and death. Kasady is a brutal serial killer, and when given the powers of the symbiote, he is a terrifying force.
While Harrelson honestly looked a little ridiculous in his mid credits scene for the first film, he’s the perfect person to portray this sadistic and terrifying character. It will also be interesting to see how Harrelson and Hardy play off one another- both as Brock and Kasady, and as Venom and Carnage. But for now we’ve got a look at Harrelson in his new duds as Cletus Kasady. Tom Hardy shared the image on Instagram with the caption “Hello Cletus” before removing it this afternoon.
