Hamilton is officially set to hit movie screens across the nation!
Deadline broke the news this morning that Hamilton is officially being released in theaters across the US and Canada on October 15th of next year (2021). The film version is being called an advancement in “live capture,” which will mix together theatrical and film elements to create one amazing movie going experience. The film is set to be released by Disney and will consist of a filmed version of the record breaking musical with the original Broadway cast.
For the past few years, writer-director and star Lin-Manuel Miranda has talked about a filmed version being released to audiences, but details were scarce in terms of how or when. The filming was completed in June of 2016 and it appears Miranda was waiting for the right way to get the film to the widest audience possible, and luckily Disney was happy to offer their assistance. It’s somewhat surprising that Disney would take this deal as the musical is in no way theirs, but at the same time it’s an obvious cash grab for the Mouse House. They also have a good working relationship with Lin-Manuel Miranda, as he helped write songs for Moana, co-starred in Marry Poppins Returns, and is currently at work on the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
