Avengers: Endgame is officially the highest grossing film if all time.
We don’t usually report on Box Office numbers. But this is a big one. Avengers: Endgame has officially surpassed James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic to become the highest grossing film of all time. The film has made $2.79 billion worldwide, surpassing Avatar’s $2.78 billion. This is especially exciting considering the fact that it knocks Cameron’s film down a few pegs.
If you’ve ever read my bio on any articles that I’ve written (check it out at the bottom of this article), you’d know that I despise Avatar. I love the Pandora section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, but I otherwise hate everything about the film. I have also had issues with Cameron at times and his comments on superhero films and the way women are presented on the big screen. From his comment on Avengers films being about “hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process” to calling Wonder Woman nothing more than an “objectified icon.” In discussion on the door debate for Titanic, he said the Mythbusters were “full of shit.” Because the film isn’t real. Meanwhile, he criticized Aquaman for not “[looking] real.”
Cameron has done little to prove that he understands the rest of the world outside of his own privileged bubble. Add to that the fact that his films are rarely as good as the box office may perceive them to be. He may be able to do some interesting things with advancements in visual effects, but overall, he’s not worthy of as much praise as everyone gives him credit for.
All of this makes the fact that Cameron has been booted from the top spot on the all time box office charts incredibly enjoyable. Seeing the Avengers succeed in this level and the recent addition of Captain Marvel to the billion dollar club makes it feel as if the world is finding its balance. Hopefully it stays that way for a bit, and with any luck the four(?!) upcoming Avatar sequels aren’t a threat to Endgame’s top spot.
If you haven’t already, you can catch Avengers: Endgame in theaters now!
