Batman News: A New Bruce Wayne for the Silver Screen & Batwoman Hits the Small Screen!

This week brought some big news for Batman fans, with a casting announcement for the next Batman film, and a trailer for a new Batwoman show. We’ve got all the details here.

The first big news comes from Variety, where they’re reporting that Robert Pattinson is set to play the Dark Knight in director Matt Reeves upcoming film, The Batman. The film is set for release on June 25th 2021, which gives Pattinson plenty of time to bulk up a bit for the role. While most know the actor for his turn as Cedric Diggery in the Harry Potter films or as Edward Cullen in the Twilight series, Pattinson has made a name for himself in recent years as a champion of independent films.

Warner Brothers, Pattinson, and Reeves have yet to officially confirm the casting news, but his name has been swirling around the rumor mill for some time now. While we don’t know any specifics of the film or it’s plot, it is set to take place in the DCEU, meaning Pattinson is replacing Ben Affleck. Whether the film will act as a prequel to the films Affleck starred in or reset things for this version of the Caped Crusader, isn’t clear. Hopefully we’ll get some more news over the coming months, with some sort of bigger announcement out of this summer’s San Diego Comic Con.

Moving to the TV side of things- CW has seen major success with their “Arrowverse” series’ including Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl. Those three series had a major crossover this past fall which introduced the character of Batwoman to the “Arrowverse.” Ruby Rose portrayed the character, and after tons of positive feedback from fans, CW and WB decided to move forward with a full series for the character.

This week CW dropped the first full trailer for the series which sees Rose suiting up as Kate Kane and her superhero alter ego Batwoman. Kate Kane is the cousin to Bruce Wayne in the comics, and the series is following that backstory. Another major element of the character is the fact that she is a lesbian, the show is not changing that and if anything, the trailer seems to show that the series will fully embrace that side of the character.

We’re incredibly excited for this series, and we’ll have more info on the show as it gets closer to it’s fall premiere. You can check out the full trailer for the series as well as the official plot synopsis for the show below.

Kate Kane, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.
