Shazam: Unpacking the Post Credits Scenes

Now that Shazam is playing in theaters, let’s look at the credits scenes. (SPOILERS)

Marvel has made it customary for films — especially superhero films — to include a post credits (and at times mid-credits) scene, usually teasing further adventures for whatever characters lead a film. DC has gotten on the credits scene bandwagon with one mid-credits scene and one post credits scene. We’re going to unpack both of them today. Be warned, there are some SPOILERS here.

Mid-Credits Scene

After the initial credits have finished, we see Dr. Sivana in his prison cell following his defeat. He’s attempting to find the right words to return to the Rock of Eternity and reclaim the power of the Seven Sins of Man when a voice calls to him. He looks around and finds that the voice belongs to a small caterpillar-like creature with a voicebox attached to it. This is the same creature that was seen in a glass case inside the Rock of Eternity earlier in the film. The character is not a caterpillar but a Venusian Worm named Mister Mind.

Mister Mind is the last of his kind and possesses powers that include mind-control, telepathy, mental image projection, and at times limited invulnerability and the ability to clone himself. He’s most notable for having assembled the Monster Society of Evil, a group of villains Shazam had previously fought in the comics. The Monster Society of Evil was the first time where a group of villains the hero had previously fought had joined up to take on a comic book hero.

It’s unclear as of now whether or not Mister Mind would return for the second Shazam film or a later sequel which would potentially set up a film version of the Monster Society of Evil. But either way, the future of Shazam on the big screen is sure to be just as ridiculous and wonderful as the first entry.

Post-Credits Scene

There’s not much to unpack here for the post credits scene. We see Shazam/Billy talking to a pet goldfish. It turns out is part of Freddy and him testing to see if he has the ability to talk to fish. Shazam/Billy says that it would be a stupid power, and Freddy points out that he could command billions of sea creatures if it’s possible. Shazam/Billy shrugs it off, asking who would care about something like that? It’s a funny scene that is even more hilarious given that Aquaman is currently the highest grossing DC film of all time. So clearly some people do care.
