In honor of Batman’s 80th Anniversary, we’re looking at all the upcoming films currently in production featuring Batman, his villains, and his Bat-Family.

Batman and his supporting cast of characters have been featured in over 15 films released in theaters. As one of the biggest guaranteed money makers for WB and DC there’s no plans to stop the Bat-Films from coming. If anything they plan to get more and more diverse. We’ve got the full list of upcoming films featuring the Caped Crusader and his fellow citizens of Gotham City here.

Joker – October 4th 2019

While based on the Batman villain, this film isn’t part of the interconnected DC film universe and is a one shot film starring Joaquin Phoenix as the clown prince of crime. The film was developed by director Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese, and written by Phillips and Scott Silver. The film also stars Zazie Beets, Robert DeNiro, Marc Maron and Shea Whigham, and is said to be a gritty crime film set in the early 80’s. The film is said to be a sort of origin story for the Joker but without any inclusion of Batman.

Birds of Prey – February 7th 2020

Based on the comic book series of the same name, the film is directed by Cathy Yan written by Christina Hodson and produced by Margot Robbie who will return to the role of Harley Quinn. The film will introduce Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Gotham City Detective Renee Montoya, and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. The heroes and Harley will be teaming up to take down the evil Batman villain Black Mask, portrayed by Ewan McGregor.  The official title for the film as of now is Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

The Batman – June 25th 2021

After a very long and complicated development process all that is known as of now is that director Matt Reeves is making a Batman film. He’s said the film will have appearances by multiple villains and be rooted in the fact that Batman is supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, a trait barely seen on screen. But otherwise we know nothing definitively. Not even who will play the caped crusader. But believe us when we say, this film is definitely on our radar.

Gunn

The Suicide Squad – August 6th 2021

Though it’s unclear in what terms it will take shape, this film is said to be a soft reboot of Suicide Squad with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn at the helm. Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn, and Idris Elba will be taking over for Will Smith in the role of Deadshot. Filming is said to begin this fall and we should know more about the film then, including the Squad’s official roster.

Now we get to the part where there’s some uncertainty. DC has hired numerous directors and writers to work on various projects, and none of them seem to picking up steam aside from a rumor here or there, or someone saying “eventually!” But all of these projects are rumored to be in development with no legitimate recent updates.

Batgirl – Written by Christina Hodson (Joss Whedon no longer attached).

Gotham City Sirens – Directed by David Ayer, written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, status uncertain.

Joker (Jared Leto) Movie – Executive Produced by Leto, status uncertain.

Joker and Harley Movie – Directed and written by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, status unclear.

Nightwing – Directed by Chris McKay and written by Bill Dubuque.

Keep following Poor Man’s Spoiler for more Batman coverage as well as any news on these upcoming DC projects.
