Goose the Cat: Everything You Wanna Know About The Captain Marvel Standout

If you loved Goose in Captain Marvel, we’ve got a full rundown of the character in the comics. Beware, we get into some SPOILERS.

One of the hallmarks of the Carol Danvers in the comics is her pet cat Chewie. In the film Captain Marvel, Chewie is adapted in a new way that still honors the major elements of the character. The film version of the character is renamed Goose, a nod to the Tom Cruise film Top Gun which centers on pilots at the Navy’s elite fighter weapons school. The film also sees Goose as a cat roaming the halls of an air force base who ends up following along on Carol Danvers and Nick Fury’s mission to save the world. Before we dive in further, going to warn you again that we’re getting into some bigger SPOILERS here.

Just as he is in the film, the comics version of Goose, aka Chewie, is a Flerken. Flerkens are a race of aliens that are known to look like human cats, but have some rather unique differences. As displayed in the film, Flerkens have a multitude of tentacles hidden inside their bodies which can emerge from their mouth and be used to attack assailants. Some of these tentacles, or tendrils, contain fanged maws which can take bites out of enemies as well. On top of the horrific display of tentacles, Flerkens also hold within them sub-spaces which can help them travel to different dimensions.

Chewie was first introduced in Captain Marvel Vo. 8 #1, which was released in 2014, making him a newer but still well-loved part of Carol Danvers’ story. Carol was warned of Chewie’s true form by Rocket Racoon when her and Chewie worked along side him during the same storyline. The end of that storyline saw Chewie lay 117 eggs which hatched into offspring. Carol left the Chewie and the offspring on a planet known as the Tyvorn Cluster, but Chewie soon transported back to Carol by himself. While Flerkens can’t speak to humans, they do have human intellect and can understand our conversations.

The big question now is what happens to Goose down the road. With Goose not being a cat, it’s entirely possible that he’s still alive in 2019 (or is it 2018?) when Avengers: Endgame happens. Which means we could get to see a Carol and Goose reunion. It would be awesome, but with everything else that Engame has to fit within its potentially 3 hour timeframe, we’ll see if it comes to pass. No matter what, this probably isn’t the last time we’ve seen Goose, and honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing the character randomly pop up in Marvel films from here on out. There’s also the potential for other Flerkens to pop up, especially if they do use the whole Goose laying 117 eggs thing, so that could be a fun addition to the next Captain Marvel film, or even a Guardians of the Galaxy.

For now we’ll have to wait til the end of April to see if Goose shows up in Avengers: Endgame. But you can catch him on full glory on the big screen in Captain Marvel, which is in theaters now.
