91st Oscar Blast: Documentary Feature & Documentary Short

Tonight is the 91st Annual Academy Awards! And all day today we’ll be bringing you a rundown of each category as well as reviews of the nominated films. Next up, we’re looking at the Best Documentary Short and Best Documentary Feature. We’ll explain what the categories mean and who the frontrunners are as of now.

Best Documentary Film

The Documentary Film category features some of the best documentary films of the year. This year the nominees are Free Solo, RBG, Of Fathers and Sons, Minding the Gap, and Hale County This Morning, This Evening.

Free Solo follows free solo climber Alex Honnold as he attempts to climb El Capitan. RBG documents Us Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg‘s life and career. Of Fathers and Sons follows Talal Derki as he goes back home to Syria where the area has been taken over by radical jihadist. Minding the Gap centers on a group of friends who connected over skateboarding and deal with different forms of abuse. Hale County This Morning, This Evening is a film centered around Hale County, Alabama and the African American community that lives there.

The Documentary film category can be hard to judge as the winner chosen is often the “sexy” choice. The one that’s popular and going to get attention as opposed to the best film in the category. This year RBG is possibly that choice, but the frontrunner as of now is actually Free Solo, which is honestly, the most entertaining film in the group. That being said, the other three films are without a doubt noteworthy and should be seen as they all center on issues that should be paid attention to. For now though it’s definitely between RBG and Free Solo.

Best Documentary Short

The Documentary Short category is in the same vein as Documentary feature, but features films that are less than an hour in length. This year’s nominees are Black Sheep, End Game, Lifeboat, A Night At The Garden, Period, End of Sentence.

Black Sheep tells the story of a black man who tried to shed his identity and would bleach his skin as a child. End Game centers on end of life care at multiple facilities in southern California. Lifeboat is about the rescue of refugees on the Mediterranean. A Night At the Garden consists of archival footage of a Nazi rally in Madison Square Garden before the start of WW2. Period. End of Sentence centers on the work being done in Hapur, India to help produce feminine hygiene products.

The winner here has got to be PeriodEnd of Sentence. It is without a doubt the best of the group, and has the most important message. Both of which are elements that are usually taken into consideration by the Academy, even if those aren’t always done for the Feature category.

So as of now our final word is:

Best Documentary Feature: Free Solo
Best Documentary Short: Period. End of Sentence.
