As we get closer to the 91st Annual Academy Awards, we’re seeing more shortlists for Oscar Nominees, today we have the shortlist for Visual Effects. (aka the films you actually saw this year)
Before the Oscars nominees are announced the Academy works on narrowing down potential nominees until the list is down to anywhere from 10 to 2 nominees, depending on the category. Some categories we never know about until the nominations are announced, like Best Picture, Actor, Director. But some of the shortlists are announced to the public leading up to the nomination announcement. Today we have the list of 20 films which are still in the running for an Oscar nomination for best Visual Effects. Check out the list below.
“Ant-Man and the Wasp”
“Aquaman”
“Avengers: Infinity War”
“Black Panther”
“Bumblebee”
“Christopher Robin”
“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”
“First Man”
“Incredibles 2”
“Isle of Dogs”
“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”
“Mary Poppins Returns”
“Mission: Impossible – Fallout”
“Mortal Engines”
“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms”
“Paddington 2”
“A Quiet Place”
“Ready Player One”
“Solo: A Star Wars Story”
“Welcome to Marwen”
The biggest surprise here is A Quiet Place and maybe Incredibles 2. Every single other film on this list is sort of a given in this category. We have every big Superhero film, a stop-motion film, a Star Wars film, some action and sci-fi stuff, and a few films that are more of dramas and family friend stuff with motion capture. Incredibles 2 just feels out of place because it’s an animated feature, and while I get that technically it does count, I never feel like animated features deserve a spot in this category. No offense to anyone in the field, it’s just that isn’t animation a visual effect on it’s own, and doesn’t that have it’s own category?
As for A Quiet Place, that film has had Oscar buzz around it since it’s release in the spring. And while I find it slightly silly to see it here, as it wasn’t a film with very obvious visual effects, aside from the monsters, this could be a good sign. If Academy members really love a film, they’ll sometimes put it up for nominations in every single category. There’s a chance that that’s the case here for A Quiet Place, and if so, it may come out with a lot of nominations this year.
We’ll see how this all pans out when the nominations are announced on Tuesday January 22nd, and then when the nominees get to take home Oscar gold on February 24th. Keep following Poor Man’s Spoiler for all of our Awards Season and Oscar coverage leading up to the 91st Annual Academy Awards.
