Daredevil Cancelled by Netflix, Will Likely Return on Disney+

Netflix has officially cancelled Daredevil after 3 successful seasons. What does this mean for the 2 Netflix Marvel series’ with upcoming season, and for the the 3 titles now cancelled by Netflix? We have a strong idea.

Yesterday when we posted the list of shows coming to and leaving Hulu in December we talked about The Killing. That show ran on AMC for three seasons before being picked up by Netflix for a fourth and final season. Netflix has quietly removed all four seasons over the last few months, and the show will now be available on Hulu in it’s entirety in December. Netflix previously cancelled Luke Cage and Iron Fist, and while there was worry over a cancellation of Daredevil, Marvel’s head of TV, Jeph Loeb, stated it was fine.

Loeb actually stated that Marvel currently had ideas for seasons 4, 5, and 6 in an interview with EW. And at the time stated they were extremely happy with Iron Fist season 2. Only for Netflix to cancel Iron Fist shortly after. With each cancellation the official statement has mentioned that these characters will live on in other Marvel projects. In the same interview Loeb essentially stated that the release of the shows and additional seasons was sort of defined by Netflix, and what they want, and when they want them. Netflix has a third season of Jessica Jones and a second season of The Punisher currently in production, with no date as of yet for either one’s release.

I’d be willing to put money on it that within a month or two of the release of each of those seasons, Netflix cancels them. Disney is gearing up for the release of their streaming site, Disney+, which is going to be a direct competitor with Netflix. Disney has flat out said that they hope to be at Netflix’s level or higher, with competing price ranges and content. Netflix hasn’t been happy about this and sort of sees it as an attack from Disney who had previously been a partner on multiple projects, like the Netflix Marvel series’. It’s likely Netflix is wanting to purge anything that Disney takes money from so that they don’t have to pay their direct competitor anything from their profits. Which makes sense.

That being said, we have to assume that Disney will find a way to bring Daredevil and the rest of these characters back on Disney+. They’ve been successful for Netflix, and while only loosely tied to it, they are technically part of the MCU. It’s hard to believe that Disney would just flat out throw away these beloved characters when they now could do literally anything they wanted with them moving forward. Streaming shows, movies, limited series on Disney+, the possibilities are endless.

We’ll see how things shape up in the coming months as Disney preps the release of Disney+. For now you can still catch the three seasons of Daredevil on Netflix. And be sure to check out our review of Daredevil Season 3 here.
