SDCC: Supergirl Introduces the First Transgender Superhero on TV

The 2018 San Diego International Comic Con has come to a close but we still have TONS of news from the yearly event! The CW brought all of its big shows to SDCC as is tradition. The panel with the biggest news however was for Supergirl. Which revealed that the first Transgender Superhero to ever be on TV would be joining the show. Check out the trailer for the new season below followed by all the details from the panel.

The biggest takeaway from the panel was that this show is truly something that inspires hope. It’s a show that has always been about inclusion and love, and the cast and crew take that very seriously. After a few initial questions the panel got into the new cast members. Jesse Rath has been bumped up to a series regular as Brainiac 5, Sam Witwer will be joining this season as Agent Liberty, David Ajala will portray Manchester Black, April Parker Jones will join the cast as Colonel Haley. The big casting news though is that Nicole Maines is joining the cast as Nia Nal aka Dreamer. She will be the first transgendered Superhero ever to appear on television.

Maines was brought onstage with the rest of the main cast and talked about the whole experience. She stated that she had been getting more auditions lately, as more shows are looking to include transgender characters, but this opportunity was a dream come true. It’s her hope that she can be a role model to transgender youth, and give them someone to really look up to. Stating that she wished there was a transgender superhero on TV when she was a child. She also went into detail on her character, saying that Nia comes from working with Cat Grant in DC, and Kara will sort of mentor her at CatCo and while being a Superhero.

The panel wasn’t able to go into much detail on the new season as they were only a few episodes in to shooting. They did say that there will be more time spent at CatCo this season, and we’ll see a lot more of the two sides of Kara from that. The theme for the season overall will be the question of what is stronger, hope or fear. Supergirl will have to face the challenge of still being a beacon of hope, when being an alien brings a stigma of fear to the public. The show will also get into their adaptation of the Superman: Red Son storyline which was teased at the end of season 3. They explained that the “Red Daughter” version of Kara will come into play lightly in the first half of the season and slowly build as it goes on.

We also got some details as to where the characters move forward from the end of season 3. Alex is running the DEO and has to take up this role without much of her usual support behind her. J’on will still be the father figure to Alex and Kara, but will be trying to follow in his father’s footsteps to become a man of peace amidst violence. Brainiac 5 and Alex will be butting heads a lot, as he tries to adapt to this different time and world. They also teased that at some point Winn would return. Though no details on when or how.
