In a shocking development, Director James Gunn has been fired by Marvel and Disney over offensive tweets. Walt Disney Studios Chairman, Alan Horn stated, “The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”
The inappropriate tweets in question range from comments about rape to the holocaust. Gunn released a statement since being fired saying, “Many people who have followed my career know, when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor.”
This is beyond shocking news. As Gunn has made a serious effort to be vocal about social injustice and his support for the #metoo movement. Gunn has recently turned in the first draft of a script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It’s unclear as of now how Marvel will move forward with that film.
We’ll continue to keep you posted on this story and how it may change the plans for Guardians Vol 3.
