Prelude to SDCC: 20th Century Fox (Predator, Alita, X-Men)

In anticipation of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con we’re looking at everything we know will be there, some things that may show up, and what we know about the various projects so far. The San Diego Comic Con is the biggest Pop Culture convention in the world, and many studios release new information on projects, new trailers, and much more over the five days of the convention. Today we’re taking a look at what 20th Century Fox may be bringing to the convention, including the possibility of some X-Men reveals.

As of now the only guarantee from 20th Century Fox is a potential Predator Panel. The new film in the action franchise is set to be released this September. Predator is the likeliest entry on Fox’s slate to receive a big push at the Con. Directed by Shane Black (Iron Man 3), and starring a cast full of actors who have been in various nerdy/geeky films, Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Olivia Munn (X-Men Apocalypse), Thomas Jane (Punisher), and Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) the film is a perfect match for Comic Con. And it could help give the film an extra bump in interest leading up to the release.

It’s unlikely that Fox will only bring one film to SDCC, but the question is what will they bring besides Predator. The two obvious choices are Alita: Battle Angel and X-Men. Alita is based on a well-loved manga series, produced by James Cameron (Avatar), and Directed by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City). The initial trailer gathered buzz in the geek community, but the film is going to need a bit more of a push considering to become a major hit. As of now it’s set for release in December. While it may gain interest thanks to the talent behind the camera, as well as Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) in supporting roles, it’s not a guaranteed hit. The main character’s design is rather striking, but for something that is very genre specific, it may not pack as much of a punch without good hype behind it.

As for the X-Men, with two films on the docket, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, it would make sense for Fox to bring the mutants to the Con. They could also use a boost as well. New Mutants had a lot of buzz surrounding it after the first trailer dropped last year, but after deciding to change the film significantly during production the movie was pushed back twice and is now set for release August of next year. It’s uncertain if the film is even ready for any footage to be released at Comic Con, but some publicity right now may go a long way.

Fox also would be smart to bring something from Dark Phoenix, as the film was originally set for release this fall, but was pushed to next February after needing reshoots. Word of mouth was that the reshoots couldn’t be scheduled in time to make the film’s release this fall. Given the high profile of the cast in the series it makes sense. But accounts of an early screening before any reshoots made the film sound like a disaster.

Fox may want to show the Comic Con audience some decent footage for now, and then use the buzz to help guide their reshoots. The last entry in the series, X-Men: Apocalypse, only made $155 million in the US, and didn’t get very good reviews. With Disney obtaining Fox and this potentially being the last film in this X-Men series, it’d be disappointing to see it fizzle out.

There’s always a chance that Fox could bring other films to the San Diego Comic Con, or announce other projects. But either way there’s bound to be at least a few new bits of info coming our way.
