So now that Ant-Man and the Wasp has hit theaters, we finally have an answer to where Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, was during Avengers: Infinity War. The film itself didn’t exactly give any indication. But the mid-credits scene definitely does. It’s possibly one of the most jarring credit scenes in the MCU. There’s some MAJOR SPOILERS here for Ant-Man and the Wasp. So you’ve been warned.
Once the film ends and the initial credits have finished, we see that the new Ant-Man team is working to head back to the Quantum Realm. With the help of the newly saved Janet Van Dyne, Hank Pym and their daughter Hope are sending Scott into the Quantum Realm to collect healing materials for Ghost. Janet was able to steady her Quantum issues, but it was presumably a quick fix for now. But after Scott is sent into the Quantum Realm and collects the healing materials, there’s some disturbance on the radio. And when we go back to see the team on the roof of what appears to be Hank’s lab, they’re gone. Janet, Hank, and Hope have all been taken by Thanos’ snap from the end of Infinity War.
Now honestly, this may be one of the most horrifying moments for anyone in the MCU “post snap.” At least any of our heroes. Because while yes, everyone else has seen their friends, family and loved ones, disappear before their eyes. But Scott has no idea what happened and is now potentially stuck in the Quantum Realm. It’s unlikely anyone knows where he is or what he’s doing. And there’s no guarantee that anyone can get him out. Maybe Shuri? But who knows. This is legitimately as big of a cliffhanger as everything that happened at the end of Infinity War.
The other thing that makes it so rough is that overall, the film that preceded it was such an about face from Infinity War. Avengers ended with such a devastating, and heartbreaking climax. And Ant-Man and the Wasp was a complete palette cleanser, that is just fun and entertaining from beginning to end. And then this happens. In a way it’s almost frustrating but then again, at least we have an answer now to where Scott was during Infinity War. He was on house arrest, and was helping to save Janet.
Also, there is the post credits scene at the very end of the film. With an ant playing the drums as the world collapses post snap. But that, honestly, feels like nothing after the heartbreaking mid credits scene. It’s a slight refresher. But that mid credits scene is something that is going to keep fans talking until Avengers 4 comes out next spring.
The big question now is, how does Scott get out. I don’t see him being stuck in the Quantum Realm for the majority of Avengers 4. And honestly I think him getting out will happen in the first act of the film. Like I said before, Shuri may be his best bet. She’s the only person that would probably understand Pym’s tech. So if the rest of the Avengers can find the van, maybe she can get him out. Unless he finds a way to get out himself. Janet’s use of the Quantum energy helped him get out in the first film. Maybe he can find a way to use what’s in the canister he just collected, to help get himself out.
We’ve got a long way to go til we get some real answers. But for now you can catch Ant-Man and the Wasp, and it’s insane mid credits scene in theaters.
