Infinity War: The Arrested Development Cameo You May Have Missed

Now that Avengers: Infinity War is in Theaters we’re free to dive into some of the finer elements of the film. One such element is a cameo that you may have missed upon the first viewing of the film. A cameo by a certain Arrested Development character. We do get into some SPOILERS for Infinity War, so be warned.

Anthony and Joe Russo, directors of Avengers: Infinity War, are well known for their involvement in the cult hit TV series, Arrested Development. The Russo brothers directed the Pilot as well as 4 additional episodes of the comedy series. They previously had placed the infamous “stair car” from the series in the airport scene of Captain America: Civil War.  But this time around, they were able to include an actual character from the show.

When the Guardians of the Galaxy head to Knowhere to get the Reality Infinity Stone from the Collector, Gamora walks past one of the Collector’s displays. Inside that display is none other than Tobias Fünke, painted blue and in his famous “never-nude” cut offs.

The best part of this, and this is where we get into a bit of spoilers, is that this is all completely from a reality created by Thanos. The display disappears when Thanos reveals that he has the Reality Stone, and is creating this all for the Guardians to see. Which means Thanos technically should know about Arrested Development. Which is just hilarious.

The one disappointing aspect of this is that Tobias is not played by David Cross. The actor explained to THR that he was unable to get to the set of the film, as he was directing another show in London. The Russo brothers did everything they could to get the actor to the set, even offering to fly him out to the Atlanta set. It’s a bummer that Cross didn’t portray the role himself, but on the bright side we should get more of him in the role of Tobias soon. Netflix has been shooting the newest season of Arrested Development, and while there hasn’t been any official word on a release date, there are rumors that the show could return sometime this year.

Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now, and if you’re yearning for more David Cross you can catch him on his “Oh Come On” tour starting this summer. He’ll begin at the Boston Calling Music Festival on May 27th, you can get tickets at his site, here.
