Countdown to Infinity: MCU Timeline Pt. 5 2000-2008 (The Hulk is born out of Budget Cuts)

Leading up to the release of Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, we’re taking a look back at every element of the MCU thus far in our series, Countdown to Infinity! This film is the culmination of everything that began with the first Iron Man film in 2008, and so we want to prepare you for what may be the biggest film of all time. We’ll dive into all 18 films released thus far, each of the TV series that are considered part of the MCU, and a selection of other shorts and comics considered canon within the MCU. As part of our Countdown To Infinity Series We’ll also be looking at the full MCU timeline. We continue today with a look at the history of the MCU leading into the events of Phase 1, from 2000-2008!

At this point in the MCU, we’ve seen the birth of the Avengers and the Defenders, the rise of SHIELD (and rebuilding of Hydra), and familial tragedy that would help turn our Marvel heroes into the people we love. The MCU rolls on with more tragedy and the most influential budget cuts of the MCU.

2000 – Jessica Jones

  • Maya Hansen joins AIM and begins working with Aldrich Killian to further the Extremis virus.
  • Jessica Jones is on a vacation with her family when they are in a horrible car accident. Jessica’s entire family is killed and she is taken by IGH, where she is experimented on and give superhuman abilities.
  • Jessica is adopted by Dorothy Walker, mother to Trish Walker, a child actress.

2001 – Peter Parker

  • Peter Parker and Ned Leeds are born in March of 2001.
  • Harold Meachum is diagnosed with Cancer
  • On September 12th 2001, Frank Castle enlists in the Marine Corps.
  • On September 13th 2001, Thaddeus Ross convinces the US Armed Forces to start the Bio-Tech Force Enhancement Project. An attempt to recreate Project Rebirth and give the US more Super Soldiers.
  • On October 29th The Rand Family’s airplane crashes in the Himalayas after the pilots were poisoned by The Hand under Harold Meachum’s orders. Danny Rand is the sole survivor of the plane crash and is taken to the mystic city of K’un Lun.

2003 – Arkon!

  • Arkon! starring Simon Williams is release in theatres.
  • Hydra orchestrates the start of the Iraq War.
  • Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson begin rooming together at Columbia University.
  • The Hand offers to resurrect Harold Meachum after his impending death, he accepts.

2004 – Prelude to Hulk

  • Harold Meachum dies and is resurrected by The Hand three days later, he begins to live in a secret inside an old art deco building.
  • Bruce Banner begins working on the Bio-Tech Force Enhancement Project at Culver University with Betty Ross.

2005 – The Hulk

  • With impending budget cuts, Bruce Banner decides to test the Bio-Tech Force Enhancement Project on himself and turns into the Hulk for the first time. In the process Betty Ross is injured and hospitalized.
  • The government shuts down the Bio-Tech Force Enhancement Project and Banner goes on the run. Betty stops talking to her father, and he begins searching for Banner.
  • Murdock and Nelson crash an expensive party and meet Elektra Natchios.
  • After months of dating and intimacy, Elektra find the man who killed Matt’s father, and gives him a chance to kill the man. Matt refuses and calls the cops. Elektra disappears and their relationship is over.

Avocados at Law

2006 – Avocados at Law

  • Nelson and Murdock agree to become business partners and start a law firm together once they graduate Law school.
  • After travelling through South America, and Canada, Bruce Banner winds up in Greenland where he attempts to kill himself by shooting himself in the head. He turns into the Hulk and spits out the bullet.

2007 – SHIELD Joins Ross

  • Thaddeus Ross requests help from SHIELD to find the Hulk, they agree to help and he is provided with weapons from Stark Industries.


2008 – Simon Williams

  • On February 14th Oh, Rebecca! starring Simon Williams’ is released.
  • On March 1st Nick Fury, in disguise, finds Bruce Banner in a bar. He works with two other SHIELD agents to determine how much of threat the Hulk truly is. He determines that Hulk is not a high priority.
  • Adrian Toomes forms a salvage crew that collects metal and other objects leftover from disasters and superhero battles.
  • On October 31st Haxan 2 starring Simon Williams is released in theaters.
  • On November 28th Toxic Janitor 2 starring Simon Williams is released in theaters.

We’ll stop there for now. The MCU rolls on from here, with the start of the Avengers Initiative via Iron Man!
