Captain Marvel Cast: Fury, Coulson, Ronan and More!

While the world has been counting down to Infinity War, Marvel has been working on multiple films that will follow the next Avengers flick. The most exciting of which may be Captain Marvel. That film will bring the much beloved hero Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, to the big screen on March 8th 2019 and Marvel has just announced the official start of production. Part of that announcement included a full cast list which includes some returning favorites.

Captain Marvel centers on Carol Danvers, an Air Force Pilot who gets caught in the middle of an Alien war between the Kree and Skrull races, and is given incredible powers. In the comics her powers include superhuman strength, energy projection and flight. All of which she’s expected to have in the film. The Kree have previously been seen in Guardians of the Galaxy as well as a few other Marvel properties. However this film would introduce the Skrulls for the first time. The shape-shifting alien race were the main villains behind the 2008 Marvel comics storyline, Secret Invasion. Their introduction in Captain Marvel, which is set for release between Infinity War and Avengers 4 has led many to wonder if the currently “untitled” Avengers film would be somewhat based on that storyline.

After Captain Marvel was announced in 2014, we learned that the film would take place in the 90’s and would feature a young Nick Fury as well as the villains known as The Skrulls. All of that alone is exciting enough to generate a lot of excitement for the film. Samuel L. Jackson’s Fury hasn’t been seen since 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and is said to not be part of Infinity War. As for The Skrulls,, they are one of the greatest and most well-known marvel villains of all time, and Secret Invasion changed much of the Marvel Universe. Top that off with the fact that this is Marvel’s first Female led film, and is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, making it the first female directed film, and this is monumental.

The Kree-Skrull war has been seen in the comics multiple times and has influenced some major storylines. Given that a lot of this setting and story may seem off putting to regular filmgoers, it appears that Marvel has decided to bring back some supporting players to help tell the story. Djimon Hounson and Lee Pace who played Korath and Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy will both be returning to play their characters in this film. Korath being a Kree mercenary and Ronan being a Kree fanatic. The film will also bring back Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson. Coulson died in the first Avengers film, and was brought back via the Agents of SHIELD TV show but has not been seen in the Marvel films since. With this being a prequel to the rest of the MCU, they’re able to easily use Coulson without having to explain how he survived in the TV series.

On top of the returning MCU players the film will also feature Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One) as a currently unrevealed villain, probably a Skrull leader. Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes) as Mar-Vell aka Walter Lawson, Carol Danvers’ mentor who trains her to use her cosmic powers. Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, a Kree geneticist. And Lashana Lynch, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, and Mckenna Grace in undisclosed roles.

This is sure to be another home run for Marvel once it hits theatres. Between an amazing All Star cast, and a great team of directors, it’s hard to imagine the film isn’t anything but exceptional. We’ll continue to keep an eye on the film and give you any updates as they happen between now and the film’s release on March 8th of next year.
