At the Warner Brothers Panel for this Year’s San Diego Comic Con, wrapped up with their most anticipated projects, Justice League and Aquaman. The panel, moderated by Chris Hardwick, began with a sizzle real of footage followed by logo reveals for Shazam, Suicide Squad 2, The Batman, Justice League Dark, Batgirl, Green Lantern Corps, Flash (which then led to a Flashpoint logo) and Wonder Woman 2.
After that Jason Momoa entered the stage proclaiming “the king is here.” He explained that they were currently working on filming Aquaman in Australia and the film is an origin story. He then showed a sizzle reel of footage for the film that was rather quick, showing two fishermen coming upon a ton of Atlantean style ships, the city of Atlantis, Aquaman preparing for a fight, and the logo for the film. At the end of the panel Momoa confirmed that the ships seen in the sizzle reel are Ocean Master’s (Patrick Wilson) and that he would be the main antagonist of the film stating, “I’m fighting my brother in the film.” That being said, the villainous Black Manta has been cast as actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
They then brought out the rest of the cast of Justice League, Ben Affleck (Batman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ezra Miller (Flash), Ray Fisher (Cyborg). As the cast began to take their seats Fisher ripped off a T-Shirt that said “borg life” to reveal an “I (heart) ZS” shirt (ZS for director Zack Snyder). They then had a small introduction to each of the actors. And Hardwick asked Affleck if the recent rumors of him leaving the DC film universe were true. Affleck quickly shot them down saying that he’s all in, and would do anything for Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of The Apes) the director of the upcoming solo Batman film, include being an ape.
Affleck talked about the first scene with them all in costume being a “high geek moment.” Gadot said that she’s so proud and thankful for the success of Wonder Woman. And believes it’s due in large part to everything the character stands for. Ezra talked about how great the whole experience was and the fact that they truly were the first shared universe. With the only one coming before them being the JSA, which was also them. Fisher talked about the fact that Cyborg and Flash bond not only because they came from accidents but also them being the youngest. He also mentioned that they all find a bond in the fact that they have these deeper issues with family and such. Momoa mentioned that while he’s resistant to join the League, it becomes really important and great for him because it’s the first place where he truly feels accepted and loved.
Hardwick then asked where they all were when they learned they got their parts. Gadot was on a plane when she got the news that she had the role. Momoa was in Snyder’s office and told him”I want you to play a role for me, Aquaman.” To which Jason replied, “Pardon me?” Admitting that it “was one of the biggest shocks of my life.” Miller was in Costa Rica eating fish when he got the call and had a “conniption, a full on conniption.” Fisher received a call from Snyder expecting him to turn him down for the part, “and he says so, looks like we’re making a movie together, and I said fuuuuuuuu and a bunch of bad words I can’t say given that we’re in a PG audience.” Zack was showing Ben some concept art and pulled out a Dark Knight Returns statue of Batman and Superman fighting and said “basically we’re doing this.” And Ben said he was in. It was very clear throughout the panel that this group loves what they’re doing and that the whole experience has been a dream come true for them.
The cast was asked was who in the Suicide Squad would they want to fight.. Momoa said Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang. Gadot said Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Miller said him and Will Smith had been planning it already, and he was excited to go toe to toe with the Fresh Prince. Fisher said Killer Croc or Enchantress, to see a tech versus magic fight. The final question was what their favorite experience was. Miller, Gadot and Affleck all said the first moment together. Fisher said he loved seeing all the Batman gadgets in real life. And Momoa said he loved surfing on the Batmobile with Ben Affleck.
They then revealed the trailer for the film which has also been released online. You can check it out below followed by a few notes on the footage.
The biggest Easter Egg here is a line during the trailer where the villain Steppenwolf monologues and states, “No protectors here. No Lanterns. No Kryptonians.” This line is interesting for two reasons. One, he must be talking to someone. Most likely Darkseid. The biggest bad guy in the DC Universe. Two, his mention of Lanterns, officially brings the Green Lanterns into the fold. The questions is, does this mean none of the Earth’s well known Lanterns have been given their rings as of yet? Or does it mean they’re all busy elsewhere? The second Easter Egg in there is Alfred’s line, “One misses the day when the biggest worry was exploding wind up penguins.” Obviously he’s referring to the Batman villain the Penguin. But the real question is whether or not we’ll see him after this note. It’s kind of a 50/50 chance, given that many times nowadays Easter Eggs like that tend to have greater meaning. But we’ll see how things play out.
Overall, Justice League looks really kick ass so far. And I honestly don’t feel that they’ve revealed much in the trailers. Which was a major issue with Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad. Be sure to keep an eye on Poor Man’s Spoiler for more updates on the film leading up to it’s November 17th Release.
